Conrad & Scherer Supports Lawyers For Literacy At Local Elementary School

Conrad & Scherer, together with the Young Lawyers Section of the Broward County Bar Association, donated 300 copies of Brad Meltzer’s book, I am Oprah Winfrey, to third and fourth-grade students at North Fork Elementary, located in Fort Lauderdale, Fl. The book is part of Meltzer’s “Ordinary People Change the World” series and was presented to the students on May 20 along with a pre-recorded message to the students from Brad Meltzer.

The Young Lawyers Section has been supporting Broward County schools for several years through their “Lawyers for Literacy” initiative. Volunteer lawyers read to local students each month during the school year, support book drives, and hold other events to encourage reading.

In the video message created especially for this event, Meltzer stresses to the students, “Keep reading. Reading is a superpower.”

He also explains that he started this series so his own kids would have “better heroes to look up to – people to teach them kindness, compassion and perseverance.”

“I wanted my daughter and my sons to see what a great female businessperson looks like,” he explains about the Oprah book. “I also wanted to teach them that the only thing you ever need to be in life is yourself.”
