Commitment to the Community, William Scherer, Conrad & Scherer

The nonprofit’s that are closest to our heart and I mean, my wife Ann and I as St. Anthony’s school and church.

Catholic Church as well as the Broward Center for the Performing Arts. Ann is very involved in that. We have been for a long time. I served on the Downtown Development Authority when the Downtown and the school board and the city of Fort Lauderdale in Broward County built the performing arts board.

We represented father Sims in the homeless feeding case where the city of Fort Lauderdale passed an unconstitutional ordinance and charged the Father Sims and others with feeding the homeless. We won that case, we got the city of Fort Lauderdale to change its ordinances on feeding the homeless and pretty proud of that. It was all pro bono as well.

One of my cherished memories of the practice of law was a quote from a local newspaper that I walked into a hearing in the Father Sims case with the Bible in one hand and the Constitution in the other and walked out with an injunction. In fact, that was an interesting tribute to our efforts.
