Local 17-Year-Old Phenom Wins International Mock Trial Competition, Legal Pathways Program Guides Aspiring First-Generation College Student

Marvin Exantus, a 17-year-old senior at Fort Lauderdale High School, recently achieved an extraordinary milestone. He won the prestigious title of “Best in the World” at the Ninth Annual Gladiator International Mock Trial Competition in Atlanta. His impressive victory also earned him a life-size Gladiator helmet, symbolizing his triumph. Notably, Marvin is the first student from Broward County and only the second from Florida to win this international competition.

Marvin Exantus, 17, a senior in Fort Lauderdale High School’s pre-law magnet program and hard-core competitor on its mock trial team, recently won the Ninth Annual Gladiator International Mock Trial Competition in Atlanta

Among 60 participants from countries such as the U.S., Canada, China, and Australia, Marvin’s success stands out. In fact, only 3% of mock trial participants even qualify for this exclusive event. Therefore, his achievement is a testament to his dedication and skill.

How Our Pathways to Careers in Law Program Helped Marvin

Last year, Marvin took part in our Pathways to Careers in Law program, which provided him with hands-on experience. Through this program, he had the opportunity to network closely with Conrad & Scherer attorneys. As a result, he attended trials, observed courtroom proceedings, and met with judges to gain a deeper understanding of the legal system.

“Our Pathways program is designed to give students from underrepresented backgrounds the chance to explore a career in law,” said Janine McGuire, a partner at Conrad & Scherer. “We are incredibly proud of Marvin’s success and eager to see what his future holds.”

Marvin’s Leadership and Passion for Law

In addition to his mock trial success, Marvin is an inspiring leader. As a first-generation college and law student, he has been elected senior class president at Fort Lauderdale High School every year since ninth grade. His interest in law began early, sparked during a seventh-grade tour of the school’s replica courtroom, where he met Mr. Daniel Katz, the school’s Mock Trial Coach. This meeting ignited Marvin’s passion for justice.

Besides excelling in academics, Marvin is also a strong advocate for mental health awareness. He actively participates in a school club that teaches Gen Z students stress-relief techniques like breathing exercises and sound healing. His commitment to well-being and community involvement makes him a well-rounded student.

About Our Pathways to Careers in Law Program

The Pathways to Careers in Law program, now entering its fourth year, is a partnership between Conrad & Scherer, Nova Southeastern University’s Shepard Broad College of Law, and Fort Lauderdale High School’s Law Magnet Program. It offers students from diverse backgrounds an immersive experience in the legal field. Through hands-on exposure, mentorship, and networking, our program helps prepare the next generation of legal professionals for a successful career in law.

Marvin’s Gladiator Win: A First for Broward County

The Gladiator International Mock Trial Competition, founded in 2015, has hosted over 300 competitors from 25 states and five countries. Unlike traditional team-based mock trial tournaments, Gladiator is a one-on-one competition. While coaches, teammates, and family can help with preparation, once participants enter the courtroom, they are on their own. Marvin’s victory not only reflects his individual talent but also highlights the strength of Broward County’s legal talent pipeline.
