On May 17, the fourth installment of the Conrad & Scherer Book Buddies program brought excitement and inspiration to Plantation Elementary School. With the support of Miami-based law firm Levine Kellogg Lehman Schneider + Grossman (LKLSG) and Broward County Public Schools, nearly 30 volunteer readers distributed over 200 copies of “I Am Superman” by Brad Meltzer to eager students. This event was a testament to the power of community and the enduring value of literacy.
Attorneys from Conrad & Scherer, City of Plantation Commissioners, members of the Plantation Fire Department, and other dedicated volunteers came together to make this event a memorable one. The atmosphere was charged with excitement as the children received their new books and decorated superhero capes, an activity coordinated by Hands On South Florida. Among the volunteers were City of Plantation Councilmembers Denise Horland, Erik Anderson, Louis Reinstein, and Jennifer Andreu, all of whom are proud supporters of the local community.
Since its inception in 2022, the Conrad & Scherer Book Buddies program has gifted over 700 new autographed books to students in Broward County Public Schools. This initiative aims to help children build their own home libraries and foster a lifelong love of reading. George E. Dahdal, an associate attorney at Conrad & Scherer, expressed the firm’s pride in the program, stating, “The lawyers at Conrad & Scherer are proud of The Book Buddies program, as it shows students that reading is a superpower. Throughout our 50-year history, giving back to the community has been embedded into our culture.”
“I Am Superman” is part of the Ordinary People Change the World series by New York Times bestselling author Brad Meltzer. To make the event even more special, Meltzer created a personal video for the students, further inspiring them to embrace their own superpowers through reading. You can watch the video here: Book Buddies 2024.
The event also saw participation from City of Plantation Fire Chief Don Todd, Battalion Chief Will Bacon, Battalion Chief Cary Blanchard, and City of Plantation Police Chief Howard Harrison. Adding a touch of superhero magic, a special guest appearance by Captain America delighted the students and volunteers alike.
