Pathways Fellows Visit NSU & The Broward County Courthouse

Pathways Fellows met with the Honorable Robert Diaz and Honorable Betsy Benson at the Broward County Courthouse.

Twelve Fellows participating in the Conrad & Scherer Pathways to Careers in Law, a collaboration between the Fort Lauderdale law firm, Nova Southeastern University’s Shepard Broad College of Law (NSU Law), and Fort Lauderdale High School, spent a recent afternoon at the NSU College of Law. The following week, they also toured the Broward County Courthouse.

After a mock law class taught by NSU Professor Dean Jane Cross, the Fellows toured the law school and joined nine Broward County Judges, many of whom are NSU College of Law graduates, for a reception with the Dean of the law school and members of the Conrad & Scherer law firm. Fellows from the 2022 program also attended, including Brendan Garcia, who interned at the law firm this past summer.

Janine McGuire, the Conrad & Scherer partner managing this program, said this field trip was the first in a series of experiences the Fellows will enjoy this school year. They also visited the Broward County Courthouse and will spend an afternoon at the law firm in March.

During the Courthouse visit, they observed the morning docket of the Honorable Elizabeth Scherer; met with the Honorable Robert Diaz, Honorable Betsy Benson, and Chief Judge Jack Tuter; and attended the investitures of the Honorable Catalina Avalos and Honorable Francis Viamontes.

“The power of the Pathways program is evident watching these bright young people light up when given the opportunity to meet practicing judges and attorneys,” she said.  “We are also excited to be awarding in March the first Conrad & Scherer Pathways scholarship to one undergraduate student enrolled in NSU’s new B.S. in Law program.”

“Hosting the Pathways Fellows at NSU College of Law was both a thrill and a privilege,” stressed José Roberto (Beto) Juárez Jr., Dean of NSU Shepard Broad College of Law. “We are honored to be a part of this unique partnership that is attracting students into the field of law.”
